A truck carrying 300 LPG gas cylinders caught fire, while enroute from Pratapnagar to Debari. The engine caught fire, which resulted in bursting of the tyre. Because of this, the truck driver jumped out and ran away from the spot. People from nearby areas heard the bursting sound of tyre and panicked after seeing flames.
In the meanwhile, some inhabitants informed the Fire Brigade at Hindustan Zinc. The people present on site tried to control fire by throwing water but the fire reached gas cylinders, which was later controlled by 5 fire brigade teams who reached on time.
Because of the fear of bursting of gas cylinders, traffic came to a halt, causing a 5 km jam. The incident happened at Debari around 8:30 p.m last night and situation came under control by 11p.m after which traffic started at the normal pace.
There are reports of 3 firemen breaking the windshield of the truck to control fire under the supervision of Fire brigade Commander Rajpal. As per an eye witness, the firemen took the ultimate risk of breaking the glass to diffuse the fire which could otherwise have been hazardous.
