The best part about our City of lakes is that you can eat anywhere. Go to any corner, you will find something or the other in the restaurants, both big and small, local thela valas who can even provide you alu parathas and mooli parathas in the winter season and also the fariyali centres where you can have sabudana khichdi when observing a fast and even otherwise. The only trouble is that these thelas close down before 10p.m. when they should be actually be allowed to carry on from both local and tourist point of view.

Our city has all kinds of tastes. We love dal-bati anytime and chaach to go with it. Where in Udaipur is dal-bati not available? I guess almost every market has a dal-bati outlet. Apart from this Chinese food is available everywhere, every street has chowmein available in minutes which is even parcelled with such ease and accuracy that you eat it as hot at home as packed.

Go to Shakti nagar corner, you have fantastic outlets for momos and cakes, pastries and icecreams to soothe the heat on the tongue produced by the schezwan chutney. Townhall area has chat centres where families can enjoy. Fatehsagar chowpati is another place where families can enjoy eating watching lake, though this becomes overcrowded in the tourist season.

A variety of icecreams always attracts the children on a hot summer Sunday afternoon and even as a dessert after dinner. Baskin Robbins, Havmor, Vadilal, Amul, Creambell…we have them all and people of all age groups love icecream. For the health conscious, juice centres are no less.

Every fruit vendor can be asked for the juice of choice depending upon the seasonal fruits available. Chetak circle, Hathipole, Delhi gate, Bapu bazaar…keep going and you will get fruits and juices and even buttermilk fresh or packed as you like it.

For the non-veg lovers, Udaipur is not backward at all. Mutton, chicken, a variety of fish, pork is also available. Even take away centres provide delicious lip smacking delicacies which you can enjoy on a long drive. (Boy, am I hungry now!!).

You can suit your senses from tea to coffee to lemon tea to herbal tea, thela valas give you all those especially in Panchwati area. South Indian food is also a treat since ‘you get to eat them hot’ dosas are not a privilege for just everyone at home, as the one who cooks gets to eat alone later and the not so hot ones. So very obviously I prefer eating South Indian dishes away from home.

If you are sensing a lot of something going on in your stomach, don’t blame me. I would actually ask you to bear with me, of course you need to think what I felt while thinking and writing about all this here.
