A freak accident at Fatehsagar on 5th April at 11pm resulted in the death of a young local businessman, just a day after he returned home after a trip to Singapore.
Vikas Modi (38), owner of Raj Plastochem, and son of Vishnudev Modi was resident of Navratan Complex and was driving the car, a BMW (X3), when the accident happened. The car was being driven at high speed on Fatehsagar road, and while crossing Rajiv Gandhi park, the driver lost control of the vehicle and the car crashed into a railing just before Rani Road and hit the water.
Immediately water started entering the vehicle and simultaneously the cars lock system failed, not allowing the passengers to unlock the car.
Vikas lost consciousness when the car was submerged in the water while his co-passenger, Sarveshwar Maheshwari, who is also Vikas’ brother in law, managed to break open the rear glass and escape. He too would have drowned, had the rescuers not managed to pull him out in time.
As per the police, the dead driver and co-passenger were drunk, whereas the family said that Vikas did not drink.
The vehicle was lifted out of the water and was in completely damaged condition. Impact of the accident was so heavy that all passersby reached the site to assist in rescuing the vehicle and passengers.
Once the locals informed the police, a rescue team was called and members of the team – Giriraj Sahu, Prakash and Rajesh Mali entered the waters, managed to open the gate and removed the body of Vikas Modi. After conducting initial revival options, they immediately shifted Vikas to GBH, where he succumbed.
Vikas Modi is survived by his wife and two daughters.
