Believe it or not, this man has a collection of all movies that have been shot in Udaipur. Waqar has dedicated one of his rooms to his passion. He has thousands of copies of movies as CDs and DVDs neatly stacked on one wall.
Indian film industry is not that old. The documentaries date back to 1800s whereas the history of production of Indian movies started in 1913 with first film Raja Harishchandra. As per the available data, an average of 500 films is produced in India every year.
Now many movies are being shot at foreign locations. Earlier they were shot mostly in Kolkata, Chennai, Kashmir, Kerala, Rajasthan and Mumbai. Mumbai used to be the main location. Now-a-days movies are being shot in Rajasthan extensively. Locations are chosen on the basis of natural beauty and historical importance. This is a less expensive affair as compared to creating sets in a studio. Udaipur is one of the leading tourist destinations and a lot of movies have been shot here due to suitable climates and romantic as well as historical locations. Regional and foreign shoots are a common sight in the city. A number of ad films, documentaries and television serials have been shot in Udaipur.
All information regarding these shootings is available in Waqar’s collection. He has dedicated one entire room to this collection where a rare print of Akbar Khan’s film Tajmahal (2000) is also available. Since this film was not released in India, a special print was ordered from UAE.
There is not even one actor or director or producer who hasn’t fallen in love with Udaipur. From superstar Amitabh Bachchan to the new generation heroes like Ranveer…all have loved the city and been a part of various shoots here. Some have even paid visits for leisure.
