Rubella and measles are diseases for which advance precaution is a must. Government has come up with free vaccination for rubella and measles both. Around 10 lakh children falling in the age group of 9 months to 15 years will be given free vaccination as preventive measures. The vaccination process will start in the second week of July and will be available at all schools, anaganbadi centres and community centres.

The MR (measles-rubella) vaccination is extremely important as these diseases are fatal and can also result in physical distortion. The symptoms of these diseases are as follows:

Measles: Fever, cough, cold and redness in eyes. Measles can result in physical handicap among children. The symptoms of measles are rashes which occur 2 days after fever. It can also cause diarrhoea, pneumonia and swelling in brain.

Rubella: Rubella virus is extremely fatal. The symptoms are similar to that of measles. If a pregnant woman gets affected by this virus, then it is quite likely to affect the baby. The other symptoms of this virus are fever, swelling behind ears and glands of neck. Rubella virus can also result in deafness, blindness, heart diseases and physical handicap.
