Udaipur 11^th June 2019, Geetanjali Medical College & Hospital’s Gastroenterologists & GI Surgeon performed a successful laparoscopic procedure & helped a 35-years old man suffering from a rare condition known as Celiac Artery Compression Syndrome to recover well recently. The team of doctors was led by GI Surgeon Dr. Kamal Kishore Bishnoi accompanied by Gastroenterologists Dr. Pankaj Gupta & Dr. Dhawal Vyas, Anesthetist Dr. Karuna Sharma & Radiologist Dr. Hariram.

“It’s a very rare disease, occurring in just one in 100,000 cases and it’s no less than a heart attack of the digestive system. Hailing from Pali District, Maangilal Suthar (Age 35 years) came to Geetanjali Hospital with an unusual complaint. As soon as he would begin eating, he would have extreme pain in the abdomen. So severe was the pain that he barely could eat enough to satisfy the body’s basic needs. Not surprising the patient’s weight was much below the normal weight of a person at this age. Endoscopy & CT Scan investigations confirmed the rare condition known as “Celiac Artery Compression Syndrome (also known as Median Arcuate Ligament Syndrome)”, said the treating surgeon Dr. Kamal Kishore.

Dr. Kamal also said that, “Surgery is currently the only treatment option and involves releasing the ligament that is the culprit causing the compression. The problem is that reaching this celiac artery through conventional surgery is not at all easy because it is deeply located under the crus of the diaphragm. So, it was decided that this is the ideal case for laparoscopic surgery. Using the laparoscope, I was able to reach the root of the celiac artery where human fingers could not. This helped me to achieve the precision that prevented collateral damage to healthy tissue, arteries and nerves.”

“The patient went back home on the third day after surgery. Not only was he finally able to eat without unbearable pain to follow, he was also able to get back to productive work. Conventional surgery would have taken him so much longer. Not only was he relieved and happy, but also thanked me for getting him back to being a regular eater. On follow-up visit after the surgery I am happy to say he is doing well and is back to his regular diet intake without any recurrence of symptoms,” smiled Dr. Kishore.

 What is Celiac Artery Compression Syndrome?

Celiac artery compression syndrome is defined as chronic, recurrent abdominal pain related to compression of the celiac artery by the median arcuate ligament. It is an uncommon disorder that is characterized clinically by the triad of postprandial abdominal pain, weight loss, and sometimes an abdominal bruit.

What does celiac artery do in human body?

The celiac artery supplies oxygenated blood to the digestive system – the stomach, liver, spleen and the part of the esophagus that reaches into the abdomen. Also, it supplies blood to half of the duodenum and the Pancreas. Its compression leads to not enough blood supply to the digestive system, especially after food intake when the oxygen needs go up sharply. No wonder there’s acute pain.
