There has been a drop of electricity production due to the shortage of coal in the thermal power plants of Rajasthan State. To combat this, there will be a daily power cut of 2 hours in urban area and 3 hours in the rural area of State.

The orders were released by Production and Dispatch department and the power cut became effective from today. Udaipur municipal area will see a daily power cut from 9 am to 11 am. While the power cut started from today, there is no order as to when will it end. Udaipur Circle SE, A.K.Sinha however indicated that the power cut could continue for coming 5 days.

The power plants in Rajasthan has seen a drop of 3000 mega watt (720 lakh units). When faced with electricity shortage, State Government buys electricity from the National Grid. However, considering the overall shortage of electricity in the country currently, the per unit electricity rates on the exchange have shot up to Rs 9 per unit making it non-viable for the State to procure.

The power cut in Udaipur city will result in saving of 4-5 lakh units daily
