Incidents That Shook Udaipur in year 2011

Besides several dozens of chain snatching incidents, number of murders including many female fetuses found on pavements and fatal road accidents we have listed 11 most shocking incidents which shook most of the people of Udaipur directly or indirectly. The list moves chronologically from January to December 2011.

 

Matter of fact is, we all hate listening or reading any bad news but on the contrary our human tendencies become helpless ignoring it. As the year 2011 is walking towards its end, there are several good and bad memories we are going to leave behind and look forward to a brighter and happier future with the coming New Year, 2012.

But, before moving ahead let us recollect those sad news stories and incidents which shook all of us in this year.

Devas Tunnel Mishap: Mine Worker trapped inside tunnel

On 13th January 2011, 40 year old Narayan Tomar was caught inside 200 feet deep tunnel while working on Devas Water Project. He was trapped for more than 6 days before being rescued safely. Narayan was later greeted by Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot for his patience and bravery. The incident had been covered by all national news channels.

Kirodilal Meena Arrested

Member of Parliament and Tribal leader Kirodilal Meena was arrested on 6th April 2011 after series of tussle between him and local government authorities. The action of his dramatic arrest has come just after he has been allegedly slapped by a senior police officer. One of the city’s areas turned into a check-post of armed jawans of RAF and RTF to prevent any threatening incident after the tribal leader’s arrest.

Police Commando killed

Police Commando Prakash Kumar Khateek, Resident of Bedla, Udaipur, sacrificed his life in a fatal attack by rival gang members while he was escorting a gangster Bhanu Pratap. Commando Prakash with one other jawan including Bhanu Pratap were killed on April 18, 2011. Prakash had received the honor of martyr and received guard of honor.

An infant killed by his father

It was on Sunday 23 May 2011 when a mentally ill father smashed his 8 month old daughter repeatedly on floor and killed her. This incident shook humanity to a limitless extent. The culprit Ashok Meena was an engineer in PWD who had quarreled with her wife and his anger and frustration came out on his 8 month old innocent Ranu.

Late Lieutenant Archit Verdia’s sad demise

None in the history of Udaipur had witnessed such a funeral procession of 23-year old Lt. Archit Verdia which was attended by thousands and thousands of people. The untimely death of this young brave son of Udaipur will be remembered forever. Lt. Archit was killed in a fire caught in Army Camp at Siachen on July 20, 2011.

Three of the family members killed in road accident

Just in few seconds, Udaipur’s Karanpuriya family had lost three of their members in a fatal road accident at Bekariya while they were heading to famous Nakoda Temple. 42-year old Abhay, his son Punit and Abhay’s mother Kanchandevi died while Abhay’s wife and other son were injured seriously in the accident.

  1.2 Crore Stolen from Medical College

It was 2011’s one of the biggest and the most complicated crimes took place in Udaipur when Rs.1.2 crore was stolen from the locker of Geetanjali Medical College and Hospital at Eklingpura Udaipur on the night of August 6-7 2011. The case was finally solved when the culprits were nabbed after nearly a month from Kota.

  A Lawyer arrested for demanding ‘sex’ as a bribe

How sick and shocking it is when a savior of law demands physical favor from his client for doing her work? A government public prosecutor Abhimanyu Singh was arrested in a compromising position from the bed room of his client after a raid conducted by Udaipur’s ACB on September 23, 2011. It was a joint operation between the victim lady and ACB that has thrown Mr. Prosecutor behind the bars.

Press Reporter Akanksha Rao Died

On September 17 the city was shocked by the news of sad demise of young press reporter Akanksha Rao who died after a prolong illness, Akanksha, who was 24 years old, was reporter in the Rajasthan Patrika newspaper and she was well known in Udaipur’s student circle as college and universities were her specific beat.

Sylvester Daniel fled from Police custody

4 Gujarat cops were arrested for their negligence and alleged role in helping Sylvester to escape who is one of the key witnesses of Sohrabuddin Sheikh’s fake encounter. Udaipur based Sylvester; a notorious gangster was later caught by Udaipur police from his residence at Bhopalpura on Oct 8, 2011. This incident turned into headlines in all the major national media agencies.

Facebook created unrest in Udaipur

An abusive post on Islam has sparked anger among Udaipur’s Muslim community which later turned into violent protest, agitation, riot and lathi-charge on Nov 22, 2011. The problem started after the community’s demand of arresting the culprit, that eventually turned into a political stunt and later the situation went out-of control resulting one-day unrest in the old town.

  Kite Flyer Abdul Malik died after kidney failure

It was the last shocking and sad news till the year end. International Kite Flyer Abdul Malik died on 11 Dec, 2011. 35-year old Malik had set several records for flying and making kites, he has been awarded by various governments for promoting kite flying and tourism. Abdul Malik was not only the savior of this dying sport but also had a very friendly personality. He left all of us too early.
