Thokar Chouraha to be Widened to Ease Traffic
Road widening on Shobhagpura entry road; new intersection to be built on 100 Feet Road
Udaipur, Aug 4, 2025 - In the coming days, alongside ongoing development projects in Udaipur city, three major intersections are set to be expanded to ease traffic flow and eliminate frequent traffic jams. The primary focus will be the expansion of Thokar Chouraha.
On Saturday August 2, Udaipur city MLA Tarachand Jain, Udaipur Development Authority (UDA) Commissioner Rahul Jain, Nagar Nigam Commissioner Abhishek Khanna, Traffic Deputy Ashok Anjana and other officials conducted an on-site inspection of the city and took several key decisions.
The team first visited Thokar Chouraha, where the road is currently very narrow and witnesses traffic congestion multiple times a day. MLA Jain held on-site discussions for the expansion of the intersection.
UDA and Nagar Nigam engineers shared that the road from Pratap Nagar to Seva Ashram, which passes through Thokar Chouraha, has an underpass, and just ahead (in the Sunday Market area) about 15 feet of the road belongs to the Nagar Nigam but is currently encroached by temporary settlements. It was decided that the Nigam will construct a drainage line (nala) along its boundary and then widen the road up to that point.
Additionally, there is an 11,000 KV transformer in the area that will be relocated to allow more space. The road from Seva Ashram passing through Thokar towards Ayad will also be widened by at least 10 feet after removing all existing encroachments.
Later, a centre line and pencil divider will be installed to divide the road into two lanes—one for vehicles heading towards Ayad and the other towards Pratap Nagar - to ensure smoother and organised traffic flow.
Ramps on Shobhagpura Entry Road
The team then visited the entry road of Shobhagpura 100 Feet Road from Thokar Chouraha, where evening traffic congestion is a daily issue. The MLA directed UDA and Nigam officials to demolish a ramp constructed by a mall between Ayad bridge and the entrance to 100 Feet Road. This mall had illegally constructed a ramp behind an electricity pole, narrowing the road and causing vehicle congestion.
The electricity pole will be shifted back, the ramp will be demolished, and the road will be widened with a pencil divider installed. This will allow vehicles headed to Shobhagpura to stay left and those going to University Road to continue straight, reducing confusion and congestion.
Illegal Construction on University Road
At the end section of the road coming from Shobhagpura towards University Road, some shopkeepers had initially extended their tin sheds and gradually constructed walls, turning them into permanent shops. Locals informed the MLA about this encroachment, and he instructed UDA officials to immediately remove the illegal structures and proceed with road widening.
New Intersection Before Shobhagpura
A new intersection is proposed in front of Zudio showroom on Shobhagpura 100 Feet Road. An 80 Feet Road coming from RK Circle merges at this point with the 100 Feet Road. MLA Jain directed the UDA Commissioner to remove any illegal ramps built by malls beyond their boundaries and to close unnecessary road divider cuts near the intersection to prevent accidents and ensure organised traffic flow.
Commissioner Jain instructed engineers to prepare a proper design for the new intersection and strictly remove all encroachments in the area.
Inspection of Trident Road
Prior to this, the MLA along with UDA and Nigam officials inspected the road from Hotel Trident to Doodh Talai. They assessed problematic areas and discussed potential solutions. The officials assured that the road work will be completed within a month.
Present during the inspection were BJP leaders Nanalal Vaya, Manohar Choudhary, Mukesh Sharma, Mandal president Kanhaiya Vaishnav, Ranjeet Singh Digpal, Jitendra Maru, Mahendra Doshi, Senior Municipal Engineer Mukesh Pujari, UDA Senior Engineer Sanjeev Sharma and others.
