From Lakes to Lanes: Udaipur Among India’s Cleanest Cities
Udaipur, July 18, 2025 - Udaipur has made remarkable progress compared to last year, securing the 13th rank at the national level and 3rd rank in Rajasthan in Swachh Survekshan 2024. Continuous innovations and public participation by the Nagar Nigam have made the city a frontrunner in cleanliness. Nigam Commissioner Abhishek Khanna expressed heartfelt gratitude to the residents of Udaipur for the achieved ranking and called for continued cooperation to tackle the new challenges ahead.
A New Challenge, Says Commissioner
The Commissioner said that the Corporation has achieved a historic milestone in Swachh Survekshan, made possible by the combined efforts of the Nigam and Udaipur citizens. He emphasised that this achievement has set a new benchmark, presenting a fresh challenge that must be tackled collectively. With Udaipur now at 13th place in India, the goal is to maintain and improve upon these efforts to achieve an even higher rank in next year's survey.
Key Initiatives That Counted
Commissioner Khanna highlighted several major initiatives that contributed to the improved performance:
- Door-to-door garbage collection: Last year’s performance was 40%, but this year, the Corporation achieved 96% coverage.
- Under the "No Segregation, No Waste Collection" campaign, source segregation increased from 40% to 82%.
- Scientific processing of waste stood at 88%.
- Udaipur was awarded a 3-star rating in Garbage-Free City (GFC) evaluation.
- The city also received ODF (Open Defecation Free) status.
These major improvements played a key role in propelling Udaipur to a higher national ranking.
Notable Improvements Led to Success
The Nigam implemented significant improvements in core sanitation services. Commissioner Khanna and his team ran extensive public awareness campaigns, which played a vital role in bringing Udaipur to the forefront in cleanliness.
96% coverage in door-to-door garbage collection ensures nearly every household is regularly serviced.
The 82% source-level segregation rate indicates a high level of awareness among residents to separate wet and dry waste.
88% scientific waste processing is commendable from an environmental standpoint and supports a sustainable sanitation model.
Udaipur received the GFC 3-Star rating and ODF Water+ certification, proving that the City of Lakes now ranks among the cleanest and most organised cities in India.
Commissioner’s Appeal Yields Results
Commissioner Khanna acknowledged the contribution of former Commissioner Ram Prakash, who initiated public awareness campaigns. His appeals for public cooperation laid a strong foundation, and residents responded positively, contributing significantly to this success.
Various IEC (Information, Education, Communication) activities were carried out, such as:
- Swachhata Hi Seva (Cleanliness is Service) campaign
- Swachhata Apnao, Bimari Bhagao (Adopt Cleanliness, Eliminate Diseases)
- Good Governance Day programmes
- Door-to-door awareness drives
- Maintenance of public and community toilets, urinals
- Awareness programmes on single-use plastic bans, RRR centres, lake cleaning drives, cleanliness rallies and cleaning of memorials, statues of national figures, as well as heritage and tourist sites
These efforts collectively brought about remarkable cleanliness results in the city.
Innovation and Monitoring Brought Positive Results
The Nigam operated as if cleanliness was a movement. Daily activities saw continuous innovations, and effective inspections ensured all assigned tasks were executed properly.
All Nagar Nigam vehicles involved in garbage collection were fitted with GPS tracking systems to ensure real-time monitoring.
The Digital Waste Management Platform was used effectively.
Participation from schools, business communities, associations and NGOs was ensured.
Various campaigns based on cleanliness themes, including street plays, awareness rallies and incentive-based competitions, significantly contributed to the outcome.
