Maharana Shambhu Singh's establishment of the school in 1864 challenged societal norms, marking a pivotal moment in India's educational history. At a time when girls education was considered taboo, the school symbolized progress and equality, providing early opportunities for girls to access formal education.

The Maharana Girls Senior Secondary School was established in 1864 by Maharana Shambhu Singh, the erstwhile king of Mewar (1847-1874). In his ruling tenure (1861-1874) he made significant contributions to Udaipur. This institution holds the distinction of being North India’s first formal school for girls. At a time when female education was ignored, Maharana Shambhu Singh boldly defied norms to ensure that young girls received the same opportunities as males.

• 1945: Upgraded to Maharana Girls High School
• 1955: Became a Girls Middle School
• 1964: Progressed to a Girls Secondary School
• 1971: Achieved Girls Higher Secondary School status
• 1989: Established as Girls Senior Secondary School

 

Various Developments

Over many decades, the school has not only preserved its historical significance, but also embraced modern educational practices. Today, it consists of state-of-the-art facilities such as smart classrooms, fully equipped science laboratories, and even Vocational Programs in Healthcare and Beauty Wellness. Under the guidance of Principal Ruchi Parik (present Principal), the school continues to prioritize accessibility by providing free uniforms, textbooks, and bicycles through government initiatives, removing the financial burdens of students. She also mentioned that the school has implemented solar power system. Additionally, RO water purifiers have been installed, and CCTV cameras are in place.

Despite being a Hindi-medium school to cater to the majority of the Hindi speaking children, the school never ignored the importance of English as a language. English has been taught as a subject at this institution since the time of the Maharana. Initially, during the period of Maharana Shambhu Singh, 51 girls got admission while three teachers were appointed to run the school. In 1866, the subjects included Sanskrit, Hindi, Farsi (Persian) and English. At present the school runs classes till 12th. Today, it resembles a private school in terms of facilities and quality of education. The school also has Biology, Chemistry and Physics labs and Arts, Science and Commerce are also taught at the school. 

Renovation by MMCF

The school was handed over to the state government in 1950. In the first phase, the Maharana of Mewar Charitable Foundation (MMCF) restored and repaired the main building. The school celebrated its 150th anniversary on January 28, 2015. During the second phase, on May 2, 2015, a major hall, four classrooms, and two laboratories were renovated and restored. The third phase of renovation took place in May 2016, focusing on the ground floor which included six classrooms, toilets, and entrance ramps. This phase was completed in July 2016. 

Lakshyaraj Singh Mewar, of the Udaipur Royal family, did away with fees for the year 2023 and covered the expenses himself. Additionally, he has been actively supporting various developmental initiatives at the school.

Maharana Shambhu Singh, despite his lack of formal education, prioritized education as an important aspect during his reign. He opposed the practice of "Sati" and implemented stringent fines against offenders. Under his rule, he significantly expanded existing schools and constructed new educational institutions throughout Udaipur.
