Digital payments are the need of the hour to avoid the risk of spreading the infection.

The affirmation came after the Union Finance Minister sought clarification whether currency notes could be virus and bacteria carriers.

RBI affirmed that currency notes could be corona carriers in the present times, as informed by the CAIT (Confederation of All India Traders). The CAIT has demanded government incentives for digital payments.

It has been reported that the CAIT wrote to the Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in March when the pandemic started taking its toll on everyone. The letter was forwarded to RBI and it was affirmed that currency notes could be potential bacteria and virus carriers. Hence it was also stated that digital payments must be encouraged in order to limit the risk of corona virus.

Going further, the CAIT has also demanded government incentives for (acceptance and adoption of digital payments). The statement further said that bank charges levied for digital transaction must be waived off and that the banks must be given direct subsidy in lieu of bank charges by the government.

The issue of currency notes has been rolling over media since the pandemic spread and it was being questioned and even pointed out that currency notes are one of the biggest potential carriers of any kind of bacteria and the issue must be looked into.
