June 21, 2025 - If you don’t yet have a PAN card and plan to apply for one, it will now be mandatory to provide your Aadhaar card. The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has announced that from July 1, 2025, an Aadhaar card will be compulsory for new PAN card applications. New rules for PAN card applications will be implemented on the Income Tax portal from July.

For those who already have both PAN and Aadhaar, it is mandatory to link the two. Existing PAN cardholders have time until December 31, 2025, to link their Aadhaar without any penalty. If they fail to do so, their PAN will become inactive from next year.
