Crucial Role of Mahseer in Water Body Conservation
Workshop on Mahseer Eco and Angling Tourism brings out benefits of eco-tourism
Udaipur, October 14, 2024 - A workshop on Mahseer Eco and Angling Tourism was organised at the Forest Building Auditorium under the aegis of Green People Society, recently on Friday, October 11. The workshop covered several areas pertaining to eco-tourism, including the upstream flow areas of Mahseer fish, the food chain, breeding, and the role of Mahseer in preventing lake pollution.
Professor Atul Borgohain, director and expert at the Golden Mahseer Breeding Center in Nameri, was the keynote speaker. He said that Mahseer fish plays a crucial role in the purity and conservation of water bodies. He explained the benefits of eco-tourism through the conservation of Mahseer fish and discussed the technique of angling or fishing using hooks. The importance of raising awareness among the general public and tourists about the Mahseer fish was stressed upon.
Rahul Bhatnagar, president of the Green People Society, provided detailed information on the efforts being made for the conservation of Mahseer in Udaipur. He mentioned that Mahseer is also known as the "Tiger Fish," a predatory fish that symbolises the purity of water bodies. It is found only in pollution-free and pure-water areas.
He also said that the state government has declared the area around the large lake as a conservation reserve for the protection of Mahseer fish.
Retired Fisheries Department officer and society member Ismail Ali Durga highlighted the purpose of the workshop and discussed the role of Mahseer in water body conservation. Also present at the event were Dr Rupali Barua, Pratap Singh Chundawat, Sohel Majboor, Yaseen Pathan, Ganesh Lal Gothwal, Dr Tejraj Dan, Professor Anil Mehta, Nandkishore, Dr Lalit Joshi, and Vinay Dave.
