Cyber fraud is increasingly common, especially with the rise of online transactions. Almost every shop now offers a scanner for mobile payments, making it convenient to pay bills without carrying cash. However, using free public Wi-Fi for such transactions can be dangerous and often leads to fraud.

What is a Free Wi-Fi Scam?

Cybercriminals exploit public Wi-Fi to hack into your financial accounts. They use these networks to trick people into their traps. While free public Wi-Fi is convenient, it can also be a medium for scams. Hackers can send malware through these connections to steal sensitive information, including access to your bank accounts.

How to Avoid This Scam?

  2. Inform the nearest cybercrime police station and use the National Cybercrime Reporting Portal if you encounter fraud.https://cybercrime.gov.in/

  6. Disable Auto-Connect: Ensure your device doesn’t automatically connect to networks.
  7. Turn Off Wi-Fi When Not in Use:Prevent unwanted connections by disabling Wi-Fi when it’s not needed.
  8. Install a Firewall:Add another layer of protection.
  9. Apply Security Updates:Keep your device updated with the latest security patches.
  10. Secure Browser Settings:Adjust your browser’s security settings.
  11. Regular Software Updates:Update your software to get the latest security fixes.
  12. Look for HTTPS: Ensure the web address starts with HTTPS for a secure connection, but remain cautious as scammers also use HTTPS.
  13. Use Mobile Data:Prefer mobile data over public Wi-Fi when handling sensitive information.
  14. Use VPN:VPNs provide encryption and can protect your data on public Wi-Fi.
