Rajasthan Police Warns About UPI Auto-Pay Fraud
The rise of digital payments has made transactions easier and more convenient, with many people now using UPI apps instead of cash. However, this trend has also led to an increase in fraud, particularly with UPI Auto-Pay.
Fraudsters are exploiting UPI Auto-Pay by sending fake messages that mimic those from legitimate companies. These messages contain fraudulent payment links controlled by scammers. They use various excuses, such as issues with electricity bills, water bills, or OTT subscriptions, to trick people into authorizing payments.
UPI Auto-Pay allows for automatic payments on specific dates for services like OTT recharges, mobile recharges, mutual fund investments, loans, credit card bills, and utility bills. Users can set the payment time and date, ensuring automatic deductions from their accounts and avoiding payment-related hassles.
“Once you authorize a one-time payment through auto-pay, the payment will be automatically deducted on a set date. If you no longer need this service, make sure to turn off auto-pay. It's best to avoid using auto-pay whenever possible. Additionally, always verify any payment-related messages before making a payment. Scammers frequently send fake messages that appear to be from legitimate companies to deceive people. To avoid fraud, thoroughly check any message before proceeding with a payment.” - Lilaram, CI, Cyber Branch, Udaipur
The Rajasthan Police has issued a warning to remain vigilant and cautious to prevent falling victim to these scams.
