Indian Educator Sudha Murthy has a productive insight on children's reading habits

She shared her views in the 16th edition of the Jaipur Literature Festival regarding the education of children

The children’s environment after Covid is around electronic gadgets. Even in Covid children were surrounded by gadgets. Online classes and increase level of entertainment platforms have made children lazy and less productive. Sudha Murty is an Indian educator, author and philanthropist who is chairperson of the Infosys Foundation shared her views in the 16th edition of the Jaipur Literature Festival regarding the education of children.

She claimed that today's youth have less concentration and many distractions. She also added that until they are at least 14 years old, parents should encourage their children to read books instead of using technology. Sudha Murthy remarked that raising kids in the modern world was challenging, particularly after Covid, when schools required that all students take online courses.

“It will affect their eyes in the long run, attention span has come down too. It’s a worldwide thing. Everywhere it is happening. I prefer our children should not use electronic gadgets, as it affects their eyes, they will not enjoy simple things like holding a book.” - Sudha Murthy, Infosys Chairperson

The most recent Annual Status of Education Report (ASER Rural), 2022, found a significant decline in children's reading habits. She also counseled the younger generation to put "honesty and hard work" before "power and money."

“If you really understand life, power and money should not affect you. But you require a strong mind for that. Don’t be carried away with power, with money. Enjoy the small things and work hard and with honesty. It may not pay you immediately, but in the longer run you can create something good,” she said.
