Rajasthan joins list of states who are allowing education institutes to open in a regulated manner from 18 January, after nearly three quarters of being closed.

Schools, colleges and coaching institutes were the first casualties of the COVID-19 crisis and were closed much before the complete lockdown was imposed – state wise as well as across India.

The Chief Minister of Rajasthan – Ashok Gehlot, in a review meeting late last evening announced that schools, colleges and education institutes across the state will reopen on 18 January. This decision follows the decision taken last week to keep these institutions closed till 15 January.

As far as schools are concerned – the offline classes will be held for students of Class 9 till Class 12. This group of students are in need of proper offline interaction as well as class room sessions, since the Board examinations are just 4 months away.

What however remains unclear is whether school vehicles will ply. What remains unsaid is whether the student has an obligation to stay away from school. What remains unclear is whether online classes still continue. What remains unsaid is whether the reopening of schools is due to the demand for full fee and thus schools are reopening before they should actually be.

Similarly, students of the Final Year at graduate and post graduate level will also be allowed to attend classes on college. Coaching institutes and government training institutes will also open on 18 January. In its post on 30 August, UdaipurTimes had made similar suggestions on reopening of schools.

However, medical college, dental college, nursing college and paramedical colleges will open from 11 January considering the need for manpower in the vaccination project.

As per the decided COVID safety protocol for reopening of schools, students from classes 9 till 12 will be allowed to attend school. 50% attendance will be permitted each day, with each set alternating. Social distancing, sanitization of the school, students, school staff, vehicle drivers, wearing of masks, etc. will need to be imposed. Health department will provide proper training to all staff on COVID protocol.
