The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) in an update on 2 May, extended the exemption on choosing Mathematics as a subject in Class 11.

CBSE Circular dated 2 May 2024 accords permission to offer Mathematics (Paper # 041) in Class 11 for the Academic Session 2024-25 to students who selected Basic Mathematics (Paper # 241) in Class 10 for the Academic Session 2023-24.

What is Maths Basic and Maths Standard

As per CBSE regulations in 2019, two levels of Mathematics was introduced in Class 10 for the All India Senior School Secondary Examination for the session ending March 2020 and onwards. As per the Circular, Mathematics Standard was for students who wished to opt for Mathematics (041) in Class 11. The other Mathematics Basic (241) was for students who did not wish to pursue Mathematics Standard in Class 11. Students who opted for Basic, can only opt for Applied Mathematics in Class 11.

Because of COVID, CBSE permitted students to opt for Mathematics Standard in Class 11, irrespective of whichever Paper (Basic/Standard) they had chosen in Class 10. This extension was granted year on year till the last academic year.

As per the circular on 2 May, the CBSE has agreed to extend this exemption for another year, as there will be many changes proposed due to the implementation of the NEP 2020 (New Education Policy). The circular, however, says that before permitting Mathematics Standard in Class 11 to students of Mathematics Basic in Class 10, the school must satisfy that the student has the aptitude to pursue Mathematics Standard in Class 11.
