CBSE Changes Exam Pattern for Classes 11 and 12

20% Of the grade will now come from assessments, practical exams, and project work

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has announced significant changes to the examination pattern for Classes 11 and 12, aimed at promoting holistic development and critical thinking among students. One of the key changes is the reduction in the weight of final board exam results from 100 to 80%. The remaining 20% of the grade will now come from assessments, practical exams, and project work. This shift is designed to reduce rote learning and encourage a competency-based application of classroom concepts.

The new pattern also increases the proportion of competency-based questions, including multiple-choice questions (MCQs), case-based, and source-based questions, from 40 to 50%. Consequently, the percentage of constructed response questions, which require short and long answers, has been reduced from 40 to 30%.

Benefits and Challenges

These changes are expected to relieve student stress and anxiety, fostering a more favorable learning environment. The emphasis on critical thinking and competency-based learning aims to equip students with essential skills for the 21st century.

However, implementation poses challenges. Ensuring uniformity in internal assessments, maintaining the quality of project work, and training teachers to evaluate students conceptual understanding and practical skills effectively are significant hurdles. Additionally, students and teachers need to adapt to this new approach, highlighting the need for clear communication and capacity-building exercises.
