NAAC: Around 34,000 colleges and 690 Universities are operating without NAAC accreditation
There are total 1,113 universities and 43,796 colleges across the country
On Monday, February 13, 2023, the Ministry of Education notified Parliament that just 418 universities and 9,062 institutions in the country had earned accreditation from the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC). Over 690 universities and 34,000 institutions do not have NAAC accreditation.
According to the All India Survey on Higher Education Report 2020-21, which was published on January 31, the country has 1,113 universities and 43,796 colleges. In answer to BJP MPs' questions, Minister of State for Education Dr Subash Sarkar stated that the National Education Policy 2020 (NEP 2020) anticipates all higher educational institutions (HEIs) aiming for the highest level of accreditation within the next 15 years.
In India, universities and colleges are accredited by NAAC, an inter-university centre of University Grants Commission (UGC). The number of colleges operating without NAAC accreditation are 34,734.
According to the UGC, NAAC has significantly lowered the assessment and accreditation price structure in order to include all educational institutions under the accreditation system. The metrics or questions in the handbook for the affiliated or constituent colleges' self-study report have likewise been severely reduced.
