The University Grants Commission (UGC) has introduced two new Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) focused on Arctic and polar studies, now available on the SWAYAM platform. These courses aim to deepen understanding in key areas such as climate, environmental protection, governance, policy, and law concerning the Arctic region.

Starting from July 18, 2024, the courses include "Understanding the Arctic: Climate and Environmental Protection" and "Polar Science, Arctic Governance, Policy, and Law." Each course spans 15 weeks, commencing on July 18 and concluding on October 31, with registration open until August 31.

UGC emphasized the relevance of these courses amidst changing global weather patterns, underscoring their impact on phenomena like monsoon cycles and rising sea levels. These offerings are designed to align with India's Arctic Policy, ensuring that students gain comprehensive insights into pivotal issues shaping global environmental discourse.

According to an official release by the UGC, courses on Arctic studies have been chosen to align with India's Arctic Policy. The UGC Subject Matter Expert Committee selected these courses to cover the six key areas outlined in India's Arctic Policy.

Both courses are credit-eligible, providing universities with flexibility in integrating them into their curriculam. The exams for these MOOCs are scheduled for December 14 and 15, 2024, respectively.
