Dadasaheb Phalke Award for Mithun Chakraborty
Indian film star Mithun Chakraborty has been honoured with the Dadasaheb Phalke Award. The actor-politician wll be conferred the award at the 70th National Film Awards ceremony on October 8. This was announced by Information & Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw.
The legendary actor made his debut with an award-winning performance in the Mrinal Sen-directorial film Mrigayaa in 1976. Thereafter, he gave many resounding box-office hits but his most popular and iconic performance was in the 1982 film Disco Dancer.
Congratulatory messages have poured in for the 74-year-old actor. who earlier this year was honoured with the Padma Bhushan Award. Minister Vaishnaw wrote on X "Mithun Da's remarkable cinematic journey inspires generations! Honoured to announce that the Dadasaheb Phalke Selection Jury has decided to award legendary actor, Sh. Mithun Chakraborty Ji for his iconic contribution to Indian Cinema."
Prime Minister Narendra Modi too shared his congratulatory message, saying "Delighted that Shri Mithun Chakraborty Ji has been conferred the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award, recognising his unparalleled contributions to Indian cinema. He is a cultural icon admired across generations for his versatile performance."
Other past recipients of this award include Waheeda Rehman and Amitabh Bachchan.
The upcoming ceremony will be presided over by President Droupadi Murmu.
