Dengue Cases Spike, Medical Department Struggles to Control Outbreak

In the last three days, 68 new cases have been reported

The rising number of dengue cases has become a serious concern for the medical department. Despite their efforts, the disease is spreading beyond their control. In the last three days (27, 28, and 30 September), 68 new cases have been reported. This brings the total number of dengue patients this year to 621, just two less than the 623 cases recorded in 2023.

There is a possibility that over 25 suspected patients from the samples taken on 1 October may test positive. If confirmed, this would break the record for the highest number of cases in the last five years. Out of the 621 cases, 329 are from urban areas. The Jagdish Chowk sector has the highest number with 130 cases, followed by 30 in Fatehpura, 27 in Police Line, and 18 in Bhupalpura.

Udaipur District Records

Apart from dengue, the district has also reported 141 cases of malaria, 34 cases of chikungunya, and 263 cases of Scrub Typhus from January to September.

Due to the increasing number of seasonal diseases, the medical department has scheduled a review meeting on today, October 2,2024 Mahatma Gandhi Jayanti, a public holiday.

Supply of Chemicals

The department's supply of chemicals like Temiphos, MLO, and Pyrethrum, used to control dengue and malaria mosquitoes, is running low. Temiphos is used to kill dengue larvae in clean water, MLO is for destroying malaria larvae in dirty water, and Pyrethrum is sprayed in the homes of dengue-positive patients.

However, the supply of these chemicals, provided 25 days ago, has been insufficient. Medical institutions only received 10 liters each, and Pyrethrum was completely used up in just two days of surveying. Since then, no further supply has been provided, making the department's efforts appear ineffective. Additionally, the municipal corporation has also shown a lax attitude towards fogging operations.
