Novo Nordisk Education Foundation (NNEF) has partnered with RNT Medical College in Udaipur to establish a 'Sickle Cell Wellness Hub.' This initiative aims to support people living with Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) in Rajasthan. This initiative is part of the Indian government's National Sickle Cell Anemia Elimination Mission 2023.
A MoU was signed by Dr. Vipin Mathur, Principal and Controller of RNT Medical College, and Mr. Vikrant Shrotriya, Managing Trustee of NNEF. The event was also attended by Dr. R.L. Suman, Medical Superintendent of MB Government Hospital, and Dr. Lakhan Poswal, Senior Professor and HOD of Pediatrics at RNT Medical College.
Essential Services To Be Provided
The goal is to eliminate SCD from India by 2047. The Wellness Hub will provide essential services such as diagnosis, care, monitoring, and dietary advice for economically disadvantaged individuals with SCD in Rajasthan.
The hub will also focus on improving current SCD care infrastructure, making it more child-friendly, and enhancing the skills of specialists. Educational camps will be held to raise awareness among individuals, healthcare providers, and caregivers.
"Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) is particularly prevalent among tribal communities in India, affecting about 1 in 86 births. Rajasthan faces a substantial burden from this genetic condition. Effective disease management can lessen its severity, and we are dedicated to using advanced science and technology to transform the fight against SCD. Our aim is to ensure affordable, quality healthcare for all SCD patients and to curb the disease's spread through awareness, improved practices, and widespread screening. We commend Novo Nordisk Education Foundation for this collaboration and believe it will be a crucial step towards enhancing the quality of life for those with Sickle Cell Disease in Rajasthan." - Principal Dr. Vipin Mathur
1.4 Million People Suffering with SCD
Mr. Vikrant Shrotriya emphasized that there are 1.4 million people in India with Sickle Cell Disease, with tribal communities being the most affected. The Sickle Cell Wellness Hub represents a significant step in improving healthcare for these individuals, aiming for early detection and better management of the disease.
"Sickle Cell Disease is a genetic disorder affecting hemoglobin that needs ongoing management and can lead to serious health issues and high mortality in children. We are excited to partner with the Novo Nordisk Education Foundation to tackle the challenges of SCD in Rajasthan through awareness, education, and improved diagnosis. The 'Sickle Cell Wellness Hub' is a promising new initiative, and we encourage everyone in Rajasthan dealing with SCD to make use of the services offered by this hub." - Dr Lakhan Poswal
