'Udaipur Files' Ban Case: Court Orders Review of Film after CBFC Edits
Censor Board assures Delhi High Court that certain objectionable parts have been removed
Udaipur, July 10, 2025 – The Delhi High Court has directed the producers of Udaipur Files to arrange a special screening of the film for the petitioner who has filed for a ban on the movie’s release. This ruling came after the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) told the Court on July 9 that certain objectionable portions have been removed from the film.
Udaipur Files, a film made on the brutal murder of tailor Kanhaiya Lal in Udaipur in June 2022, is scheduled for release on Friday, July 11. A Public Interest Litigation (PIL) asking for its ban was filed by Maulana Arshad Madani, president of Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind, who alleged that the film is "highly provocative" and could lead to communal tensions.
The Court directed Additional Solicitor General Chetan Sharma and senior advocate Kapil Sibal to view the special screening and said that further hearings in the matter will take place after the screening.
This ruling came even as the Supreme Court refused to hear an urgent listing of a petition filed by Mohammad Javed, an accused in the Kanhaiya Lal murder case, before the film's release. The accused had filed a petition seeking a stay on the release saying it would violate his right to a fair trial.
The petitioner was asked by the vacation Bench to bring up the matter before an appropriate Bench when the Court resumes after summer recess.
