Women in Blue to Patrol Streets Across Rajasthan
Udaipur, December 12,2024 - Women constables in blue uniforms will soon patrol public spaces across Rajasthan as part of the government’s Kalika Patrolling Units initiative. This effort aims to curb crimes against women and girls, such as harassment, teasing, and chain-snatching.
The state is preparing to launch 216 Kalika Units on November 15, with 864 women constables approved for the program. These constables will patrol streets on black scooters, ensuring safety in public areas.
Jaipur will have the highest number of units at 37, while smaller districts like Dholpur, Sirohi, Jalore, Jaisalmer, and Barmer will each get two units.
In Udaipur, 12 Kalika Units will be deployed, comprising 48 women constables working in two shifts. “Blue uniforms will be ready by November 13, and all preparations are in place,” said Yogesh Goyal, SP of Udaipur.
The patrolling teams will focus on areas like schools, colleges, markets, parks, malls, tourist spots, and religious places. Each team will consist of two women constables on scooters, ensuring visibility and accessibility.
The Special Investigation Unit for Crimes Against Women (SIUCAW) will oversee the units in Udaipur. Their scooters and helmets will display the Kalika Unit monogram for easy identification.
This initiative follows the success of the Nirbhaya Squads, introduced in 2016, which are already operational in cities like Udaipur, Jaipur, and Kota.
