On November 14, 2024, the Supreme Court dismissed a public interest litigation (PIL) that raised concerns about the privacy, integrity, and security of WhatsApp. The petition sought to ban the messaging service, alleging it did not follow the Information Technology Rules (IT Rules).
The petition was filed by Omankuttan KG, a software engineer from Kerala. He claimed that WhatsApp had a vulnerability allowing unauthorized replacement of media files.
Omankuttan argued that this flaw violated citizens fundamental rights under Article 21 of the Constitution. He also stated that it posed a potential threat to national security and national interest.
A bench of Justices MM Sundresh and Aravind Kumar decided not to entertain the petition.
