Coaching Centres Now Banned from Promoting Misleading Ads
Government guidelines to tackle misleading ads by coaching centres
The Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) has issued new guidelines to prevent misleading advertisements by coaching centres. These rules prohibit false claims like "100% selection" or "guaranteed job security."
Action Against Misleading Ads
The guidelines, titled Prevention of Misleading Advertisement in Coaching Sector, were issued following multiple complaints on the National Consumer Helpline. So far, the CCPA has sent 54 notices and imposed penalties totaling Rs 54.60 lakh.
Coaching Centres Are Now Barred From
- Making false claims about course duration or faculty credentials.
- Misrepresenting selection rates or exam rankings.
- Promising guaranteed job security or salary hikes.
- Using candidate names, photos, or testimonials without written consent.
Mandatory Disclosures
- Display disclaimers prominently in ads.
- Provide accurate information about courses and fee structures.
- Ensure courses are approved by competent authorities like AICTE or UGC.
Coverage and Exclusions
The rules apply to advertisements for academic support, tuition, and guidance services but exclude those related to counselling, sports, and creative activities.
Ensuring Transparency
CCPA Chief Nidhi Khare emphasized that coaching centres must represent their services, infrastructure, and resources truthfully. These guidelines supplement existing laws to protect students and parents from deceptive practices.
