India Celebrates 75 Years of Adoption of Constitution on Nov. 26
President Droupadi Murmu releases commemorative coin and stamp marking the 75th anniversary
November 26, 2024 – Today is Constitution Day of India and on the occasion President Droupadi Murmu addressed a joint sitting of both Houses of Parliament. Prime Minister Narendra Modi was also scheduled to attend the Constitution Day celebration which marks the beginning of year-long celebrations of 75 years of the adoption of India's Constitution.
Constitution Day, also called Samvidhan Divas, is observed annually on November 26. Initially celebrated as Law Day, the day was renamed Constitution Day by the government in 2015. This day honours the Constituent Assembly's November 26, 1949, adoption of the Indian Constitution. The Republic of India was established on January 26, 1950, when the Constitution went into force.
At the event, a commemorative coin and stamp marking the 75th anniversary was released along with books titled Making of the Constitution of India: A Glimpse and Making of the Constitution of India & its Glorious Journey.
Addressing Parliament, President Murmu said: "The government has given opportunities to all sections of the society, especially the weaker sections, the poor are getting permanent houses, electricity facilities are being provided, word-class infrastructure is being created on a large scale in the country…"
This day also coincides with the 133rd birth anniversary of Dr Bhim Rao Ambedkar, who is regarded as the principal architect of the Constitution. He was the chairman of the drafting committee of the Constituent Assembly and played a pivotal role in shaping the Indian Constitution.
