End of an Era: India Bids Goodbye to Registered Post

The British colonial era service is to be merged with Speed Post for faster, trackable delivery

Aug 1, 2025 - The Indian Postal Department has announced the discontinuation of its Registered Post service and strategically integrating it with the Speed Post service. All postmasters across the country have been instructed to implement all necessary changes by July 31, 2025, so that Registered Post can be officially discontinued from September 1, 2025.

This decision marks the end of an era of the iconic Registered Post, a system that dates back to the British colonial period... back to 1854 when Lord Dalhousie implemented the Indian Post Office Act.

According to the Postal Department, merging Registered Post with Speed Post will simplify operations and offer better services to customers. It will also enable more efficient use of postal resources, streamlining operations as per the modern communication requirements of this digital age. All government offices, Courts and institutions were instructed to amend their procedures accordingly by July 31.

Henceforth, Speed Post will be the only option for sending important documents or items.

Speed Post offers better online tracking to check sender’s parcel’s location in real-time, something that wasn’t as efficient with registered post. Speed Post, though more expensive than Registered Post, is also quicker.
