India-US Ties on Strong Foundation, Says White House After Adani Indictment

“What we believe and we're confident about is that we'll continue to navigate this issue as we have with other issues...”, says White House Press Secretary

November 22, 2024 – The White House has said that it was confident that US ties with India will not be impacted following the indictment of Gautam Adani and others in the US in a USD 265 million bribe case.

Speaking at a press briefing, White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said, “Obviously we’re aware of these allegations, and I would have to refer you to the SEC (Securities and Exchange Commission) and DOJ (Department of Justice) about the specifics of those allegations against the Adani Group.”

“What I will say is on the US and India relationship, we believe that it stands on an extremely strong foundation anchored in ties between our people and cooperation across a full range of global issues,” she added.

“What we believe and we're confident about is that we'll continue to navigate this issue as we have with other issues that may have come up as you just stated. And so the specifics of this, this is something that the SEC and DOJ can speak to directly, but again, we believe that…this relationship between India and the U.S. has been built on a strong foundation,” the Press Secretary said.

Yesterday, November 21, Indian billionaire Adani, along with his nephew Sagar Adani, was indicted in the Eastern District of New York over his role in an alleged multibillion-dollar bribery and fraud scheme in exchange for favourable terms for solar power contracts.

The Adani Group has strongly refuted the charges against its founder-chairman and others, calling the allegations “baseless and denied”.
