Revision of NCERT textbooks removed some chapters of History and Social Sciences

Mughal Courts, Gujarat Riots, Assassination of Mahatma Gandhi and some other topics removed

Some chapters of History and Social Science have been dropped from the textbooks by the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT). Dislike of Hindu Extremists Organization for Mahatma Gandhi, the Mughal Era, as well as the Delhi Sultanate are included in the removal list. Many historians, academics, and other Indians are criticizing this action.

Here’s the list of changes made:

The board has reportedly taken "King and Chronicles; the Mughal Courts (C. 16TH and 17TH centuries)"-related chapters and topics out of "Themes in Indian History -Part 2" from 12th history textbooks, according to the sources. In the book “Politics in India Since Independence”, topics “Controversies regarding Emergency” and “Gujarat riots” were removed.

Gandhi’s assassin Nathuram Godse background has been removed. Deletion of Islamic rulers history in India and chapters on US Hegemony in world politics and the Cold War has been removed.

The history of the Mughal courts and battles will no longer be covered in class 12 textbooks for both the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) and the Uttar Pradesh Board. Other significant sections of books on Indian history and political science have reportedly also been removed.

“Future historians writing of this time may well conclude that the defining battle of Brave New India wasn’t fought against unemployment or malnutrition, nor against pollution or climate change, but against Mughals. Now we have nothing but villains, it seems-Jawaharlal Nehru and the Congress even Mahatma Gandhi sometimes, and of course the Mughals, this new history for New India is not nationalist, in that it seeks to unite a nation under a benign if unwieldy banner. Instead it seeks to turn certain political constituencies against others, to create grudges and sow divisions.” - Parvati Sharma, An author

However, given that the entire syllabus has been reduced by nearly 20% since 2018, this is merely the most recent revision of textbooks produced by NCERT under PM Narendra Modi's government.
