Udaipur Municipal Corporation Plans to Resize Surajpol Intersection
The Corporation is now planning to reduce the intersection size by seven feet from the front
The Udaipur Municipal Corporation has realized that the Surajpol intersection is excessively large, creating an accident-prone area. As a result, the Corporation is now planning to reduce its size by seven feet from the parking area at Surajpol. This reduction involves demolishing walls and construction to make more space for the road. The project will take one month and has a budget of Rs 5,00,000.
Opposition from People
Since the intersection work began, there has been opposition due to the public and experts opinions not being considered. Initially, there was a cenotaph (Chatri) at Surajpol intersection and traffic was smoothly regulated by traffic lights. The public remained silent even when experiments were conducted at the intersection.
Reducing Intersection Size will Reduce Traffic
The Municipal Corporation claims that reducing the intersection's size will allow traffic to pass more easily from Town Hall to Udiapol. After this point, at the intersection where the road leads from Town Hall to Udiapol, the road width will increase from 30 feet to 37 feet. Vehicles coming from Champalal Dharamshala at Surajpol towards Bapu Bazaar also pass through this area, often causing traffic jams due to limited space. Increasing the road space by seven feet is expected to resolve this issue.
However, the residents want Surajpol intersection to be restored to its original state. The Municipal Corporation is not willing to do this and plans to proceed with reducing the size of the junction. The residents argue that the junction should be restored to its original condition and that the money spent on the experiment should be recovered from the responsible parties.
