Prime Minister Narendra Modi to inaugurate new Parliament building on May 28
A plea filed in the Supreme Court requesting the inauguration to be done in the hands of the President of India
The discussion over the new Parliament building reached the Supreme Court on Thursday May 25, 2023. According to the sources, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is going to launch a new Parliament Building on May 28, 2023. Live Law reports says that a Public Interest Litigation is filed before the top court seeking its direction that the inauguration should be done at the hands of the President of India. The plea is filed by Advocate CR Jaya Sukin.
What is this all about?
According to the petitioner, Article 79 of the constitution states that Parliament consists of the President and two Houses. The petitioner points out that the President has the power to summon and discontinue Parliament sessions. Further the petitioner states that the Lok Sabha Secretariat has humiliated the office of the President of India and violated the Constitution by not inviting the President to the event.
“President of India Smt. Droupadi Murmu is not being invited to the inauguration of the new Parliament Building. Indian President enjoys certain powers and performs a variety of ceremonial functions. The powers of the President include Executive, Legislative, Judiciary, emergency, and military power.” Live Law quoted
“It undermines the spirit of inclusion which saw the nation celebrate its first woman Adivasi President.” - a joint statement by 19 political parties stated. The grouping of these 19 Opposition parties has said it will boycott the inauguration of the new Parliament building on May 28.
