Woman arrested for killing sambar and selling its flesh at Ranthambore, Sawai Madhopur, Rajasthan

Officials claimed that the meat was sold to residents of the area, making a nice profit for the poachers

In the Khandar Range of Ranthambore National Park (RNP), a lady was detained by a team from the Forest Department on allegations of killing sambar and selling its meat. Police brought the suspect before a local court and placed her in detention for three days so they could question her.

The sambar was reportedly killed late on Friday night by the culprit, identified as Chandrakalan alias Kali, the wife of Ramswaroop Mogya, a resident of Badwas Khanda. Ram Swaroop and his two companions reportedly left the village after the Forest Department team raided it, according to a representative, who also added that the arrested suspect is currently being questioned.

“The family of the accused was working to protect crops on a farm situated on the periphery of the park. The accused killed the sambar in the forest and brought it to the farm. There it was chopped to be sold as meat. Acting on a tip-off, forester Amar Singh and some forest workers reached the spot and nabbed the woman.” - Official

Two blood-soaked axes, a knife, one kg of gunpowder, a piece of sulfur, fishing hooks, and two sambar horns were all taken by the Forest Department Team. The accused reportedly admitted under questioning that her crew had hunted the sambar 10-15 days prior by setting gunpowder down on one side of the forest area, and that they had sold the animal's flesh.
