In the aftermath of a tragic fire in Mangaf, Kuwait, on June 12, 2024, authorities have undertaken stringent measures, including the evacuation of residents from weak buildings. This has particularly affected a significant number of Indian workers, primarily from Rajasthan, who were residing in low-rent, dilapidated accommodations.

Approximately 5,000 workers from the Vagad region in Banswara-Dungarpur are employed in Kuwait. Many of them have been rendered homeless after being forced out of their makeshift dwellings due to safety concerns raised post-fire. The exact count of evacuees remains unofficial, but reports indicate a substantial displacement.

According to an anonymous expat from Banswara, Kuwaiti authorities abruptly cut electricity and evacuated residents from older buildings deemed unsafe, catching many off guard. These workers, often living in cramped conditions to economize on rent, now find themselves without shelter and struggling to secure alternative accommodations.

Adding to their difficulties is the fact that there aren't enough cheap places to live. This means their stuff is left outside, making it hard for them to get back to work. Things have gotten worse because some people trying to show how bad things are on social media could get arrested.

Another worker from Rajasthan corroborated that while those in modern apartments are safe, individuals residing in overcrowded and unsafe structures are being forcibly removed. These workers typically share small rooms with several others, amplifying their vulnerability amid the eviction crisis.

Despite these challenges, local authorities have not made temporary arrangements for the displaced workers, leaving many to seek refuge on sidewalks, exposed to the elements. Furthermore, the Indian embassy in Kuwait has not yet intervened to provide assistance or alternative accommodations for the affected workers.
