Sajjangarh: Udaipur Expected to Welcome Lions by End of July
By the end of this month, lions will be brought to Udaipur. A pair of lions (male and female) will be brought from Sakkarbaug Zoological Park, Junagadh under the animal exchange program. The Forest Department will decide the date for bringing the lions in a meeting today, July 8,2024. These lions will be placed in the Lion Safari, which is being prepared at Sajjangarh Biological Park.
Enclosure Have Capacity For 8 Lions
The Forest Department is creating a Lion Safari in Sajjangarh Sanctuary at a cost of Rs 3.45 crore. Since the establishment of the Bio Park at Sajjangarh in 2015, these enclosures have been vacant. An enclosure is being built on 26 hectares, which will include a holding area and a display area for the lions, with a capacity to house 8 lions.
Project Expected to Complete
This project is expected to be completed by November. Meanwhile, the lions will be temporarily housed in the old enclosures of the zoo located at Gulab Bagh. In return, the Bio Park will give two pairs of foxes, one pair of hyenas, two pairs of jackals, a pair of wild cats, and two chinkaras to Sakkarbaug.
The construction was supposed to be completed by September, but the process has slowed down due to the monsoon season. In the Bio Park, work is currently underway to create a Reptile Section, a Nocturnal Section, and a Leopard Rescue Center.
In February this year, the Central Zoo Authority approved bringing two lions from Junagadh Sakkarbaug Zoo. The department aims to start the Lion Safari by the end of the year to promote tourism in Udaipur.
