Trial Begins in RG Kar Medical College Rape-Murder Case
The trial in the tragic rape and murder case of a woman doctor from RG Kar Medical College and Hospital began on Monday, November 11, 2024, in a Kolkata court, nearly three months after the incident.
In-Camera Trial Underway
The trial, held in-camera, is being conducted in the court of Additional District Sessions Judge Anirban Das in Sealdah. The accused, Sanjay Roy, a civic police volunteer, faces charges filed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). The CBI had submitted its charge sheet in October 2024, and the charges were officially framed earlier this month.
Charges Against the Accused
The accused, Sanjay Roy, has been charged under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita:
- Section 64: Related to rape charges.
- Section 66:Pertains to punishment for causing death or resulting in a persistent vegetative state.
- Section 103: Involves punishment for murder.
Accused Pleads Innocence
Sanjay Roy was brought before the court on Monday. Speaking to media representatives at the court premises, he maintained his innocence, claiming he was being falsely implicated. According to the CBI’s charge sheet, there are 11 pieces of evidence suggesting Roy's involvement in the crime.
Arrests of College Principal and Police Officer
In addition to Roy, the CBI also arrested former RG Kar Medical College principal Sandip Ghosh and the former officer in charge of the Tala police station. Both have been accused of tampering with evidence related to the case.
Supreme Court Denies Request to Transfer Trial
On November 7, 2024, the Supreme Court refused to transfer the trial out of West Bengal, as requested by the accused’s legal team. The court stated that it would not issue an order for shifting the trial to another state, allowing proceedings to continue in Kolkata.
