Udaipur's 134-year-old canal gates to be replaced at Rs 60 Lakh for 20-year lifespan

The long-awaited replacement of the gates at the Fateh Sagar-Swaroop Sagar link canal has finally commenced. These gates are undergoing replacement for the first time since their initial installation back in 1889. Despite annual repair claims, the Water Resources Department has encountered persistent challenges during the monsoon season, necessitating constant maintenance such as beating the gates and placing sandbags to divert water.

However, with this ongoing project, such measures will no longer be required. An estimated sum of Rs. 60 lakh has been allocated for this renovation. The team from the contracting firm responsible for the project successfully removed the old gate located on the Fatehsagar side this past Monday.

The installation of the new gate is scheduled to be completed within the next two days. Following this, the Swaroopsagar gate will undergo a replacement as well. According to officials, the new gates, constructed from steel, have an expected lifespan of 20 years. However, the actual longevity of these gates may vary depending on the quality of construction and the flow of water they experience. It is worth noting that in recent years, the recurring problem of the old gates getting jammed had become a pressing issue, drawing significant attention and concern from enthusiasts of the lakes in the area.
