Bike thefts in Udaipur city are increasing a lot. In 2023, from January to December, a total of 623 bikes were stolen. Surajpol area had the most with 119 stolen bikes, but only 20 were found. The second-highest number of thefts occurred in the Hathi Pol area. In the last year, 95 bikes were stolen here and 70 of them were taken from MB Hospital, Udaipur. The hospital has become a hotspot for bike thieves. On average, a bike is stolen every 5 days. People coming for treatment and the hospital staff at MB Hospital are upset about the frequent bike thefts.

155 Bikes Recovered by the Police

Out of all the stolen bikes, only 46 were found by Hathipol Police Station. In the whole city, out of 623 stolen bikes, only 155, which is just 24.87%, have been found. The most bike thefts happened in Ghanta Ghar police station area, where 7 bikes were stolen, and the police caught 2 of them. Even though 2 bikes are stolen every day on average, the police can't seem to stop it. Thieves are now becoming bolder, doing crimes in busy areas during the day, making us question how effective the police are.

In the city, thieves mostly steal two-wheeler vehicles, especially bikes from companies like Hero, Honda and Bajaj. Thieves often use a special key to easily unlock new bikes. After stealing, they sell these bikes quietly in faraway locations. If the stolen bikes don't sell, the thieves take off the parts and sell them to mechanics who buy them quickly because these bikes are very popular. The parts are then used for fixing other bikes. Sometimes, the thieves even sell the bikes in other states.

After stealing bikes in the city, the thieves bring them to villages. They sell the bikes to people in rural areas at different prices. In villages, there is usually no police intervention regarding transportation, so it's easy for them to move around and sell the bikes there. Because the prices are low, buyers don't ask for bike documents and just buy them. Stolen bikes, which usually cost Rs 60-70,000/-, are easily available for Rs 10-20,000/-.
