India has put forward Udaipur, Indore and Bhopal for the Wetland City Accreditation (WCA) scheme, part of the Ramsar Convention. This program recognizes cities globally for their initiatives in safeguarding natural or human-made wetlands. These nominations mark the first time Indian cities are being considered, with proposals coming from state wetlands authorities working alongside municipal corporations. 

"Delighted to announce the nomination of India's first three cities Indore, Bhopal, and Udaipur submitted to Ramsar Convention for its prestigious voluntary Wetland City Accreditation scheme. The scheme aims to promote conservation and wise use of urban and peri-urban wetlands as well as sustainable socio-economic benefits for local populations." Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav posted on X. 

Udaipur in Rajasthan is encircled by five significant wetlands: Pichola, Fateh Sagar, Rang Sagar, Swaroop Sagar, and Doodh Talai. These wetlands play a crucial role in the city's culture and identity. They contribute to the local climate and act as a protective barrier against extreme events. 

The Ramsar Convention is a global agreement that focuses on preserving and wisely utilizing wetlands. Named after the Iranian city of Ramsar, where it was signed on February 2, 1971, the treaty aims to safeguard these vital ecosystems.
