Udaipur grapples with poor air quality

AQI surpasses 170 for 2 consecutive days...

Over the last two days, the air quality in the city has worsened, reaching an Air Quality Index (AQI) of 179 on Thursday and 172 on Friday. This marks the highest AQI for the month. Nevertheless, in comparison to December of the previous year, the air remains relatively clear.

A drop in temperature contributes to an increase in pollution. As per the Pollution Control Board, during December 2022, the Air Quality Index (AQI) was only 94 on the 30 out of 31 days. However, for 10 days, it remained above 200, falling into the poor category. This time around, out of the 22 days so far, the AQI has stayed within the normal range for 18 days. The main reason is that, for 14 days, the minimum temperature has been more than 10 degrees, with a maximum reaching up to 17.6 degrees. In contrast, last year, during the first 10 days of December, the temperature had remained below 10 degrees.

Friday marked the second coldest night of the season, bringing a bit of relief as the sun shone during the day. Over the past 24 hours, the maximum temperature increased by 0.9 degrees, reaching 25.2 degrees. This is 0.8 degrees lower than the December average of 26. On the flip side, there was a decrease of 0.8 degrees in the minimum temperature, averaging at 8.1 degrees only 0.1 degrees lower than the 8.2-degree average. Tuesday saw the minimum temperature at 7.9 degrees, making it the second coldest night of the season. Following that, there was an increase of up to 1 degree in the night temperature over the next two days.
