Lake Pollution Tarnishing Udaipur's Image as 'City of Lakes'
Udaipur, known as the "City of Lakes," attracts thousands of tourists every month. However, the increasing pollution in its key lakes, particularly Lake Pichola, is deteriorating the city’s image. The historic old city, surrounded by Lake Pichola, sees a constant influx of visitors, but the condition of the lake has worsened over time.
Lake Pichola, which is one of Udaipur's most popular attractions, is now polluted with fungi, dirt, and garbage. While some parts of the lake remain clean, others have become highly contaminated. A cleaning drive was organized on Sunday under the leadership of lake enthusiast Haji Sardar Mohammad, focusing on the Rang Sagar and Chandpol areas. During this initiative, volunteers removed trash and bottles from the lake.
Lake enthusiasts present at the event emphasized that stricter enforcement from the authorities could significantly reduce waste in the lake. They believe that with consistent efforts, Lake Pichola can be restored to its former glory.
Iconic spots such as Bagore Ki Haveli, Gangaur Ghat, and Ambrai offer breathtaking views of the lake. However, the growing pollution is now tarnishing the beauty that attracts tourists to these areas. Previous reports have raised concerns over sewage water and the spread of weeds in the lake, both of which contribute to the ongoing pollution problem.
To prevent Lake Pollution in Udaipur Several Measures can be Implemented
- Authorities should enforce strict rules against dumping waste into the lakes. Installing proper garbage bins around tourist spots and residential areas near the lakes can help manage littering.
- Sewage water is a significant contributor to lake pollution. The city must ensure that all sewage is treated properly before being discharged into lakes, with upgraded and expanded sewage treatment plants.
- Organizing frequent lake-cleaning initiatives, like the one led by Haji Sardar Mohammad, can help maintain cleanliness. Community involvement and volunteerism should be encouraged.
- Regular monitoring and removal of weeds from the lakes can prevent the growth of harmful plants, which can disrupt the water ecosystem and contribute to pollution.
- Educating locals and tourists about the importance of keeping the lakes clean through awareness campaigns can reduce careless littering and pollution.
- Promoting eco-friendly tourism practices by urging visitors not to pollute the lakes and adopting sustainable activities around the lakes can protect their environment.
- Regular testing and monitoring of water quality in the lakes can help detect pollution early and allow authorities to take timely action.
