In an effort to enhance Udaipur's cleanliness and secure a better ranking in the upcoming Swachhata Sarvekshan-2024, the Udaipur Municipal Corporation has initiated strict measures to tackle waste management issues. In the previous Swachh Survekshan-2023, Udaipur faced a setback, securing the 206th position primarily due to poor solid waste management, scoring zero out of 100. 

What is Swachh Survekshan?

The Swachh Survekshan, organized by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs in India, is currently focused on the theme "Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle" for 2024. This survey assesses cleanliness levels across cities. Udaipur is actively participating, with initiatives like enforcing waste management measures and urging hotel-restaurant operators to install bio-degradable waste plants. The aim is to enhance cleanliness rankings, emphasizing the importance of reducing, reusing, and recycling waste for a sustainable future.

Notice Issued to Hotel-Restaurant Operators

Municipal Commissioner Ram Prakash has issued notices to 49 hotel-restaurant operators in the city's first phase. These notices require hotels and restaurants producing 100 kilograms of waste daily to install bio-degradable waste plants. Failure to comply within 30 days will result in a penalty of Rs. 5,000 per day. If the deadline isn't met by March 1, 2024, a penalty of Rs. 1.50 lakh will be imposed by March 30, 2024.

Efforts to Elevate Udaipur's Ranking

Commissioner Ram Prakash highlighted Udaipur's status as the fourth most beautiful city globally and aims to improve its cleanliness ranking to the top 20. This endeavor relies on the cooperation of the city's smart citizens.

Need for Bio-degradable Waste Plants

Deputy Mayor Paras Singhvi disclosed that nearly 150 hotels and restaurants in the city are generating 100 kilograms of waste daily without bio-degradable waste plants. Installing these plants is crucial to manage the 15,000 kilograms of waste produced daily within hotels, providing municipal workers with better opportunities to maintain cleanliness.

While some hotels like Hotel Leela Palace have already installed bio-degradable waste plants, others are encouraged to follow suit. This collective effort is essential for ensuring a cleaner and more sustainable environment in Udaipur. While some hotels have already complied, others are urged to join in for a cleaner, sustainable Udaipur.
