Adivasi Divas 9th August-Who are Adivasis?

Adivasis are those indigenous people who existed prior to the Dravidians and Indo-Aryans.

World Tribal Day is celebrated on 9th August… to be more precise and more Indian way of putting it forward is “Adivasi Divas”. Now what is this Adivasi Divas? To be simple it hints towards the day of the tribes wherein their existence is celebrated as Adivasis are those indigenous people who existed prior to the Dravidians and Indo-Aryans. They are considered to be the original inhabitants of the Indian sub-continent.

It is quite imperative that these people known as Adivasis are protected as they have been living their life as per the ancient traditions and the clans still prefer to live in their own “world”. It may also be noted that the adivasis are more among the poorest groups in the society.

As per sources available, tribes in India constitute 8.2 % of the total population. India has the largest number of tribes as compared to other countries. As per Anthropological Survey of India, there are 461 tribal communities in India.

The biggest tribe is Gond tribe mostly found in Madhya Pradesh. This tribe is known for their valour. Some of them can also be found in Maharashtra, Chhatisgarh, Andhra Pradesh and Odisha. The Bheel tribe of Rajasthan can be found in Udaipur, Sirohi, Dungarpur, Banswara and also in Gujarat, MP, Maharashtra and Tripura.

The tribal people observe their festivals, which have no direct conflict with any religion, and they conduct marriage among them according to their tribal custom. They have their own way of life to maintain all privileges in matters connected with marriage and succession, according to their customary tribal faith.(source:wikipedia)

Then there are Santhal from West Bengal, Great Andamanese tribes from Andaman, Khasi tribes from Meghalaya, Garo tribes also from Meghalaya, Angami from Nagaland, Munda from Jharkhand, Bhutia from Sikkim, Chenchu from Andhra Pradesh, Kodava from Coorg, Toto from Jalpaiguri, Irulas from Kerala, Nyishi from Arunachal Pradesh, Bodo from Assam, Warli from Maharashtra and Gujarat, Toda from Ooty, Kurumban from Kerala and Tamil Nadu, Soliga from Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, Siddis from Karnataka who are believed to have migrated from South East Africa.
