Udaipur, October 16, 2024 - People often think that since eating dry fruits is beneficial for health, they can consume them in any quantity and it will only be good for them. However, the truth is that consuming too much dry fruits can have a negative impact on your digestive system.

When you hear the term "dry fruits," several types of nuts and dried fruits like cashews, raisins, almonds, walnuts, dates, fox nuts (makhana), pistachios, and figs come to mind. You may be surprised to learn that these small fruits are packed with various nutrients. They contain several micronutrients such as vitamins, fiber, magnesium, sulfates, etc. According to Ayurveda, there are specific rules for consuming every type of dry fruit, such as when to eat them, how much to eat, and how to eat them.

Although dry fruits are quite beneficial for your health, Dr Chanchal Sharma, director of Asha Ayurveda and woman health expert, has shared some important facts about dry fruits, which will help you understand the Ayurvedic rules for eating them.

As mentioned earlier, dry fruits contain several nutrients and are also high in calories, which can help in gaining weight. Therefore, it’s important to always be mindful of the quantity in which you consume them. Experts suggest you can regularly consume about 1 ounce of dry fruits.

Some people mistakenly believe that eating only dry fruits will provide them with all the necessary nutrients, but this is not true. Therefore, it is essential to eat a balanced diet that includes fruits, vegetables, lentils, bread, etc. alongside dry fruits. This is crucial for your overall development. So, it is advised to complement your meals with dry fruits.

Dry fruits contain natural sugars, and consuming them in large quantities can lead to several health issues. For example, raisins are particularly high in natural sugars, so they should not be consumed in excess.

One known fact about raisins is that they are completely dehydrated, so after eating them, it is important to increase your water intake. Eating too many raisins can also increase the risk of constipation. Since raisins are high in calories, overconsumption can also lead to weight gain.

Although dry fruits contain many nutrients, they are especially rich in iron and fibre, which aid digestion. Regular consumption in the right amount can help you feel full and reduce hunger, making it easier to manage your diet. Therefore, you can safely consume an appropriate amount of dry fruits daily.
