On the International Dance Day 2022, let’s pay homage to Natya Samrat Uday Shanker. Uday Shanker was born in Udaipur & taught dance in India as well as abroad. He is known as the “Father of Modern Dance” in India. Uday Shankar introduced Indian dance & culture to Europe & America, helping in establishing Indian dance on the global map.

In 1962, he was awarded the “Sangeet Natak Akademi Fellowship” aka “Akademi Ratna Sadasyata”. In 1971, he was awarded with the second highest civilian award, “Padma Visbhushan” by the government of India.

He is famous for creating fusion style of dance. He adapted European theatrical techniques to Indian Classical Dance, where he combined the elements of Indian Classical, folk & tribal dance.
