The Phogat Legacy Continues: Vinesh Eyes Gold at the Olympics
Vinesh Phogat of India has crafted history at the Paris Olympics 2024 after she reached the finals of the Women's 50kg Freestyle Wrestling event. She became the first Indian woman to enter a finals of a wrestling event at the Olympics. Vinesh turned the semi final against Yusneylis Guzman of Cuba into a one sided match creaming the champion 5-0 to enter the final and assuring India of another medal at the Paris Olympics.
With stunning victories over World No 1 and reigning champion Yui Susaki of Japan in the round of 16 and taking the match against Ukraine's Oksana Livach, Vinesh's rout of the Cuban challenge keeps her in contention of a Gold as she takes on the challenge from USA Sarah Ann Hildebrandt in the finals on Wednesday 7 August.
Meanwhile it was heartbreak for Harmanpreet's Indian side in the Hockey Semifinals where they lost to Germany 3-2 in a scintillating match. One team had to be disappointed at the end of the day, and unfortunately it was India even after they began with the lead in the first quarter of the match. After Germany changed the equation in the second quarter by scoring 2 goals, India came back to equalise in the third and the fourth belonged to Germany when they took a lead 3-2 in the final quater. A last minute chance secured by Shamsher turned into disaster as the ball sailed above the goal mast by a few inches, giving Germany its seat in the final. India, which looked the better unit all across the four quarters, will still have a go at the Bronze medal, but their hopes of making a dream run into the first Olympics after 1980 were dashed by a clinical Germany.
Neeraj Chopra the Golden Boy of Indian Javelin also made it to the Men's Javelin Throw Final after clocking 89.34meters.
In all a positive day for India, with Vinesh and Neeraj making the finals and the Indian Hockey team playing a spirited match.
