Elon Musk Proposes AI Satellite Network to Combat Global Warming

The Tesla, SpaceX, and X owner's masterplan to control Earth’s solar intake is a bold idea that raises questions about cost, feasibility and planetary governance

Nov 4, 2025 - Elon Musk, the owner of Tesla, X and SpaceX, has proposed an innovative and unique idea to fight global warming. In a post on X, Musk said, “A large solar-powered AI satellite constellation would be able to prevent global warming by making tiny adjustments in how much solar energy reaches Earth.”

According to scientific studies, such a system could reduce global temperatures by 1 to 2 degrees Celsius. The satellites, according to Musk, would dynamically modulate Earth’s solar energy intake though minor adjustments.

However, how practical is such a suggestion? Doing this would require deploying thousands of satellites into orbit, which would be extremely challenging both technically and economically. The cost of implementing such a system could exceed $100 billion.

Plus there would be potential regional cooling imbalances and governance challenges. It is also possible that some regions might experience extreme cold, while others may not be affected at all. Another major concern would be determining which country would have control over this system.

In fact Wood Mackenzie’s Energy Transition Outlook 2025–26 has warned of the risk of AI saying that its rise could actually push global warming higher. It projects that the world is on course for 2.6°C of warming by 2100 — with net zero by 2050 now out of reach.

Social media users, too, have questioned Musk’s theory with one saying, “But you know this is not a solution, because soon the Sun will enter a Grand Solar Minimum, and with the ongoing geomagnetic excursion and the weakening of Earth’s magnetic field, we will be bombarded with more intense space radiation, causing increased volcanic eruptions, the collapse of ocean currents, and global cooling. You were talking about the connection between geomagnetic excursions and ice ages — you know this!”

Another wrote, “AI adjusting sunlight to balance Earth’s temperature… that’s not climate tech anymore, that’s planetary engineering,” wrote a third.
